Substack attracts 95 million visits, up 40% YoY

The number of Substack email newsletters earning at least half a million dollars has doubled in two years, with the top ten accounts alone collectively earning $40m a year, Press Gazette has found. Substack attracted 95 million visits in December 2024, which was a 40% increase from December 2023 and made it the 26th most-visited news site. The site has also been awarded SimilarWeb‘s Digital Winner award, with 139% year-on-year growth in its monthly active app usage.

BBC World Service cuts 130 jobs, as it realigns budget for its international audience

The BBC is set to cut 130 roles in its World Service team as part of a plan to save £6m, which sees eight podcasts and radio programmes, including The Forum, The Explanation, Business Matters and the 1530 World Business close. It says the changes will allow it to align resources to have the most impact for audiences internationally. And remain committed to high-quality journalism across its 42 language services.

Spend up for social, display and CTV ads, with six in ten increasing spend

Social media, digital display, and CTV ads are top priorities in 2025, according to Mediaocean. Nearly seven in ten (68%) plan to increase spend on social, 67% plan to increase spend on digital display and video. And, more than half (55%) said they’ll up their spend on CTV. The report also revealed that marketers are less concerned about third-party cookie depreciation. Now, they are worried about the decline in the ability to measure campaign effectiveness on tech platforms and open web.

LinkedIn reports record engagement and revenue growth

LinkedIn reports record engagement again in FY25 Q2, according to Microsoft’s latest earnings results. It has consistently reported records, every time but once, since it acquired LinkedIn in 2016. That said, it only reports number of app sign-sups, rather than active users. It has however, grown the platform’s revenue by 9%. It also plans to expand its ad offerings, updating it ad attribution and allowing the boosting of personal posts.

Trump’s new press secretary says briefings will be open to ‘new media’

Trump’s new press secretary Karoline Leavitt used her White House debut to take a swipe at the traditional media, and announce that TikTokers, influencers and podcasters will be welcomed into briefings. The briefing defended the administration’s whirlwind first week, and marked history, as Leavitt, at 27, is the youngest ever press secretary. The conference served as a ‘warning to reporters’ about their coverage containing ‘lies’.
